The dangerous world of Panem is heading back to theaters. The trailer for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, the latest installment in the Hunger Games franchise, has been released, and fans are already hyped. With this new chapter, we’re getting another look at the savage game where children are forced to fight for their lives.
The film is based on the 2025 novel of the same name by Suzanne Collins. The story is set 24 years before the events of the original Hunger Games — this one goes back in time to dig into untold territory. This time, the focus is on Haymitch Abernathy, who is later known as the mentor of Katniss Everdeen and a past victor from District 12.
The story begins on the morning of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games. This is the moment when children from each district are selected to participate in the deadly competition. However, this time the situation is far more intense, as the 50th Hunger Games mark Panem’s second Quarter Quell. The Quarter Quell takes place every 25 years, and during this event, the rules become even harsher.

For this special edition, each district is required to send twice the number of tributes to the Capitol. While the standard number is 24 tributes, this time it rises to 48. This means 48 children must fight against each other, with only one survivor at the end. The odds are worse than ever.
Joseph Zada takes on the lead role of Haymitch Abernathy. He is joined by a stacked cast. Jesse Plemons plays a young Plutarch Heavensbee, while Ralph Fiennes appears as the villainous President Snow. Glenn Close plays District 12 official Drusilla Sickle.
The film also features Kieran Culkin as the eccentric broadcast host Caesar Flickerman, and Elle Fanning as a young Effie Trinket. Mckenna Grace appears as District 12 tribute Maysilee Donner, while Maya Hawke plays a young Wiress.
In addition, Whitney Peak portrays Lenore Dove Baird, Haymitch’s love interest, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. plays a young Beetee Latier.
The movie is directed by Francis Lawrence, who’s no stranger to this franchise. The screenplay is written by Billy Ray. The producers include Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, with Francis Lawrence also serving as part of the production team.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is set to hit theaters on November 20. The trailer’s already got people talking, and it’s clear the film will deliver the same gut-punch energy that made the franchise a global phenomenon.
