
Renowned French actress Nathalie Baye passed away on Friday, April 17, 2026, at her home in Paris. She was 77.
Her family confirmed the news to Agence France-Presse (AFP), stating that she had been battling Lewy body dementia, a serious neurological condition that affects thinking, behavior, and movement.
Nathalie Baye enjoyed a career spanning more than five decades and established herself as one of France’s most respected actresses.
She rose to prominence with the 1973 film “Day for Night” and went on to appear in numerous successful films. Internationally, she was recognized for her role in Steven Spielberg’s “Catch Me if You Can,” where she portrayed the mother of Leonardo DiCaprio’s character.
In recent years, she appeared in the 2022 film “Downton Abbey: A New Era” as Madame de Montmirail, sharing the screen with Maggie Smith. Over the course of her career, she amassed more than 100 acting credits and became a defining figure in French cinema.
For her outstanding performances, Baye won the prestigious César Award for Best Actress four times. In 2009, she was also honored with one of France’s highest civilian distinctions, recognizing her significant contributions to the arts.
In her personal life, she is survived by her daughter, Laura Smet, who is also an actress. Laura’s father is the legendary French singer Johnny Hallyday, often referred to as the “French Elvis.”
