Ryan Gosling Breaks His Franchise Rule for ‘Star Wars: Starfighter,’ Calls It a “Once-in-a-Lifetime” Role

After years of passing on blockbuster deals, the three-time Oscar nominee says ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ was simply too good to walk away from.

Ryan Gosling has built a career on instinct. While Hollywood’s biggest franchises came knocking, he kept walking — until a phone call about a galaxy far, far away changed everything.

The actor, nominated three times for an Oscar, admits he spent years deliberately sidestepping franchise commitments. Not out of arrogance, but patience. Something never felt right — until director Shawn Levy put a script in his hands for Star Wars: Starfighter.

“It was Shawn’s enthusiasm and his vision and the script,” Gosling explained. “I just avoided these things because they never felt right. And I’m glad I did because I feel like it was worth waiting for. It is like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

That kind of clarity is rare in an industry where actors often chase the biggest paycheck rather than the best story. Gosling’s track record backs up his judgment. From La La Land to Barbie, his choices have consistently paid off — critically and commercially.

Starfighter, directed by Levy and written by Jonathan Tropper, is a standalone story set five years after The Rise of Skywalker, operating completely outside the Skywalker saga.

The ensemble cast includes Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Amy Adams, Aaron Pierre, and several rising talents — a sign that Lucasfilm is investing seriously in fresh energy.

Gosling has called it “such a great story with great and original characters,” packed with “heart and adventure.”

Whether this becomes the first chapter of a longer journey for his character remains to be seen. Star Wars: Starfighter hits theaters May 28, 2027.
