
Universal Pictures’ animated sequel The Super Mario Galaxy Movie held firm atop the domestic box office Friday, pulling in $7.4 million. The studio is projecting a $30 million weekend haul, which would push the film’s cumulative domestic total to $350 million — marking its third straight weekend in the No. 1 spot.
Among new entries, Warner Bros. and Atomic Monster’s Lee Cronin’s The Mummy debuted in third place with $5.2 million from 3,304 North American theaters. Written and directed by Evil Dead Rise filmmaker Lee Cronin, the body-horror reimagining of Karl Freund’s 1932 classic is tracking toward approximately $12 million by Sunday, per industry estimates.
Jack Reynor and Laia Costa star as a journalist couple who come face-to-face with an ancient evil while searching for their daughter, missing for eight years. May Calamawy, Natalie Grace, Shylo Molina, and Billie Roy round out the principal cast.
Project Hail Mary held at No. 2 with $5.22 million Friday, maintaining a strong grip on the chart. The film is expected to add $18.5 million over the weekend, pushing its domestic cumulative to a projected $283 million.
Magnolia Pictures’ Normal landed at No. 7 with $1.06 million from 2,060 theaters. The crime thriller — starring Bob Odenkirk, co-written by Odenkirk and Derek Kolstad, and directed by Ben Wheatley — is tracking toward $2.4 million for its opening weekend. Henry Winkler, Lena Headey, and Billy MacLellan also appear in the film.
Holdovers filled out the rest of the top five. Kristopher Borgli’s rom-com-thriller The Drama placed fourth with an estimated $1.5 million; a projected $4.7 million Sunday finish would lift its domestic total to $39.5 million. You, Me & Tuscany rounded out the top five at No. 5 with $1.1 million in its second weekend, tracking toward an additional $3.5 million and a $14 million domestic cumulative by close of weekend.
