The Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala is known for its glittering red carpet and packed celebrity room.

This year, though, one of its biggest stars won’t be there in person. Leonardo DiCaprio, who was scheduled to receive the Desert Palm Achievement Award, had to miss Saturday night’s ceremony because he couldn’t travel out of the Caribbean amid sudden air restrictions.

Instead of a dramatic last-minute dash to California, DiCaprio found himself stuck in St. Barts, where he had been vacationing with family and friends ahead of the New Year. Photos from the trip showed him alongside Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez, but by the weekend, global events had reshaped travel plans across the region.

Festival organizers stressed that the actor’s absence had nothing to do with choice or scheduling conflicts. In a statement, a spokesperson said DiCaprio was unable to attend due to “unexpected travel disruptions and restricted airspace,” adding that the festival was still proud to celebrate his work and long-standing impact on film.

Complicating matters further, Palm Springs International Airport announced that departing flights were under a ground stop due to an FAA air traffic control issue affecting much of Southern California.

While planes could still arrive, delays and diversions added to the uncertainty for travelers heading in and out of the area.

The wider disruption came on the same day President Donald Trump announced that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife had been taken into U.S. custody following a military operation.

The developing situation contributed to heightened security and airspace restrictions that rippled far beyond Venezuela.

Even without DiCaprio in the room, the night remained a major moment for his latest film, One Battle After Another. Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, the movie has become an early awards-season favorite, earning the best picture prize from the National Society of Film Critics.

DiCaprio’s performance as a former revolutionary drawn back into danger to save his daughter has also placed him firmly in the Oscar conversation.

Meanwhile, the Palm Springs gala pushed ahead with a long list of A-list honorees, including Timothée Chalamet, Kate Hudson, Michael B. Jordan, Adam Sandler, and Guillermo del Toro.

The message was clear: while travel troubles may ground even Hollywood’s biggest names, the show—and the celebration of cinema—goes on.
