Taylor Swift walked into the 2026 American Music Awards as the most-nominated artist of the night. Eight categories. The most of anyone. She walked out with nothing — and wasn’t even there to see it.

The 52nd AMAs aired Monday, May 25, live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Swift led all nominees with eight nods, including Artist of the Year, Album of the Year for The Life of a Showgirl, Song of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia,” and Song of the Summer for “Elizabeth Taylor.” By the time Queen Latifah wrapped up the night, every single one of those trophies had gone to someone else.

BTS took Artist of the Year. Sabrina Carpenter won Album of the Year. HUNTR/X claimed Song of the Year. KATSEYE took home New Artist of the Year. Swift’s name was called zero times.

And here’s what makes it sting more: this is the second year in a row. At the 2025 AMAs, she was nominated six times and came up empty there too.

The AMAs aren’t decided by a panel of industry insiders. They’re voted on by fans. Swift’s fanbase — the Swifties — has been one of the most organized, most dedicated fanbases in modern music for over a decade. For years, that loyalty turned into trophies at fan-voted shows. Right now, it’s not translating.

Industry expert Chad Teixeira put it plainly: the back-to-back shutout signals “a shift in how Taylor is viewed” within the current music landscape. Whether that’s a temporary dip or something larger playing out is unclear — but two consecutive years of zero wins at a show where fans literally decide the outcome is hard to ignore.

None of this erases what she’s already built. Swift holds the all-time record for AMA wins with 40 — Michael Jackson is second with 24, and that gap isn’t closing anytime soon.

Swift didn’t attend the Las Vegas ceremony. According to People, she was in New York City with fiancé Travis Kelce, focused on their upcoming wedding. The two got engaged in August 2025 after roughly two years together, and sources confirm planning is well underway for a summer ceremony.

In the weeks leading up to the AMAs, Swift was spotted out in New York multiple times — dinners with her parents and brother Austin, a night out for a friend’s birthday, evenings with close friends. She and Kelce also flew to Greece together earlier this month for a teammate’s wedding. The award show simply wasn’t where she needed to be right now.

Whether skipping a show where she had eight nominations helped or hurt her chances is a question fans are loudly debating online.

BTS opened the show with a pre-taped performance of “Hooligan” from their Las Vegas concert the night before — their first performance at an awards show in four years. They picked up three trophies total: Artist of the Year, Song of the Summer for “Swim,” and Best Male K-Pop Artist, pushing their all-time AMA haul to 14.

Sabrina Carpenter, Cardi B, and Bruno Mars each grabbed three awards as well. Newcomer SOMBR had arguably the night’s most talked-about performance, closing his set of “Homewrecker” in a full-on rainstorm onstage. Billy Idol received the Lifetime Achievement Award.

It was a strong, competitive night. Not Taylor Swift’s night — for the second year running.
