Ariana Grande released her new single “Hate That I Made You Love Me” on Friday, officially launching the era for her forthcoming eighth studio album, Petal, due July 31 via Republic Records.
On the surface, the mid-tempo track reads as a breakup anthem. Grande sings about a former lover she left behind without much effort — “Hate that I made you love me / ‘Cause I barely tried.” But the song shifts in its bridge, where Grande turns the lens toward something far bigger than a relationship.
“I felt your projections when you felt so insecure / Tell me why is it this way, why you so hate to see women endure / Is it really my fault you all gave me your hearts on your own accord / I don’t really think so,” she sings — lines that appear to address the weight of fame, public obsession, and the scrutiny that has followed her for over a decade.
The dual reading did not go unnoticed. Fans and critics quickly drew comparisons to “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” from Eternal Sunshine, where a similar technique — a personal heartbreak layered over a message to her audience — made the song one of her most resonant in years.

Grande produced the track alongside Max Martin and ILYA Salmanzadeh, the same trio behind some of her most acclaimed work across Sweetener and thank u, next. She called it “one of my favorite songs I’ll ever write.”
The official music video, directed by Christian Breslauer and shot by Schindler’s List cinematographer Janusz Kaminski, is set to arrive Monday, June 1. Actor Justin Long appears in the clip’s already-viral teaser, continuing Grande’s tradition of casting well-known actors in her visual projects.
Petal, described by Grande as “a little feral” and built around the idea of “breaking up with all kinds of negative attachments,” arrives as the pop star prepares to kick off her Eternal Sunshine Tour on June 6 in Oakland. Grande has suggested the run may be her last for “a long, long time.”
