Girls Trip, is officially preparing for a return to the big screen nearly a decade after the original film’s release. Actress Tiffany Haddish confirmed on the red carpet of Netflix’s The Roast of Kevin Hart that the sequel is now “in the works.”
Pointing to producer Will Packer, Haddish said, “He’s the real boss — he already said it himself.” The comment is being viewed as the first public confirmation of the sequel within the industry.
The film will reunite the original “Flossy Posse” cast, including Jada Pinkett Smith, Regina Hall, and Queen Latifah. Haddish shared that the four stars are already staying in regular contact, saying, “We’ve been hanging out.”

Shooting Planned for Summer 2026, With an ‘Exotic’ Location
During a recent event in Las Vegas, Haddish also clarified the production timeline. She said, “I don’t know the exact location, but it’s somewhere exotic — a place we don’t normally go, but should. Shooting is supposed to start this summer.”
According to sources, Afrochella Festival in Ghana has emerged as a possible filming location. Screenwriter Tracy Oliver previously hinted at the idea during the Sundance Film Festival. The major African cultural and music event could provide a fresh and energetic backdrop for the sequel.
Script Finally Completed, Original Creative Team Returning
Producer Will Packer revealed in March 2025 that “for the first time, there is a complete script.” The update marks a major milestone for the sequel, which had remained stuck in the treatment stage for several years.
Director Malcolm D. Lee will return to helm the project, while Kenya Barris, creator of Black-ish, and Tracy Oliver are writing the screenplay. The return of the original creative team is now officially in motion. Packer also hinted that several new faces could join the story alongside the original cast.
Released in 2017 by Universal Pictures, Girls Trip earned more than $140 million worldwide against a production budget of just $19 million. It became the first comedy film of 2017 to cross the $100 million mark at the domestic box office.
The film also made history as the first movie created by an all-Black team of talent, writers, producers, and director to surpass the $100 million milestone. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie holds a 91% Certified Fresh rating.
Queen Latifah had already expressed her support for the sequel, previously describing the project as “locked and loaded.” Neither Will Packer Productions nor Universal Pictures has announced an official release date yet, but with filming expected to begin in summer 2026, the movie could arrive in theaters sometime in 2027.
